The talk looks at why Peter decided to write a novel, where the ideas for plot and characters came from and how it was written, including all the things that went wrong. He will also explain his experience publishing with all the ‘closed-shop’, complex and time-consuming processes involved. The end result is both a physical and digital book and a new mini-career in book marketing.
Peter Watson was born in Norfolk soon after the end of Second World War. Peter's family was poor, there were no holidays but there was always food on the table. He experienced the usual English state school education ending up at the Boy’s Grammar School in Thetford. University did not beckon but his headmaster pointed him toward a career involving some new things called computers. Peter worked initially on the technical side before somebody decided he was better at talking than writing code. Jobs in sales, marketing and management followed. His last full-time employment was with a large American IT company where he was European Vice President.
Peter's career provided lots of opportunity for writing, from strategic plans to marketing material. Here he learnt the need for good grammar, audience focus and editing. While employed full-time, it never crossed his mind to write for pleasure. Only when he retired did he eventually decide to write a novel. The Sillingham Robins is the result.
We will be meeting at noon in the Main Hall at Fountainhall at the Cross (Albyn Place) for a sandwich lunch before the talk.
